Tummy tuck recovery typically unfolds over several weeks, beginning with short walks and careful movement before progressing to work, everyday activities, and exercise. Knowing what to expect from abdominoplasty can make it easier to plan time away from work, arrange help at home, and give your body the time it needs to heal.
At his office in Lewisville, TX, Stuart Lipton, MD, provides surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic care. Dr. Lipton is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, has practiced for more than two decades, and has significant experience performing tummy tucks and other body contouring procedures.
Week One: Rest, Walking, and Swelling
The first week is usually the most restrictive part of tummy tuck recovery. Your abdomen will feel tight, and you’ll need to be cautious when standing upright and moving around. Dr. Lipton encourages short walks three or four times a day for a few minutes at a time during the first couple of weeks. You’ll likely walk slightly hunched over at first because of abdominal tightness.
Some people also have surgical drains, which are generally removed between four days and two weeks after surgery.
Week Two: Moving More Comfortably
As you approach the two-week mark, you can gradually increase activity according to Dr. Lipton’s postoperative instructions. Walking on a level surface can often become part of your routine around this point.
Many patients return to work after about two weeks, although your timeline depends on how you’re healing and what your job requires. You’ll still need to avoid straining your lower abdomen, heavy lifting, and strenuous activity. You’ll also wear a compression garment for a period of time as your abdomen heals.
Weeks Three and Four: Building Back Your Routine
During this stage, continue increasing your everyday movement according to the instructions you receive from Dr. Lipton. Although you may be feeling better, strenuous exercise and lifting still need to wait.
Weeks Four Through Six: Gradually Returning to Exercise
You can often resume low-impact aerobic activity around four to six weeks after surgery. Your timeline may be longer if extensive abdominal muscle repair was performed.
Strenuous workouts and lifting generally need to wait at least six weeks. Follow the instructions you receive during your follow-up visits rather than judging readiness based only on how good you feel.
Weeks Six Through Eight and Beyond
Around the two-month mark, many people return to most types of exercise. You should still use caution when reintroducing abdominal exercises such as crunches.
Your body will continue changing as swelling settles and tissues heal. Recovery isn’t identical for everyone, so your progress matters more than following an exact calendar.
