Am I A Candidate For Chemical Peel Treatments?

Many adults are good candidates for chemical peel treatments. To ensure optimal results with minimal risks, we conduct a thorough consultation, medical history review, and examination of the skin. It is important to discuss all medications and supplements that are taken; some can increase the risk of adverse reactions to chemical agents. A history of cold sores or noticeable scarring may also contribute to poor results from a chemical peel.

If you are interested in getting a chemical peel, schedule a consultation with us so we can discuss your concerns and how, or if, a chemical peel may help. What Results Can I Expect From Chemical Peel Treatment?

How Long Does It Take To Start To See Results?

Improvements can be seen right away after a light peel but, due to the superficial nature of this treatment, those improvements are subtle. More obvious results occur when a series of light peels is performed.

Medium peels may cause mild to moderate flaking for approximately one week. After that time, visible improvements can continue for up to one month .Deep chemical peels penetrate through the epidermis and can cause significant side effects like swelling and redness. Results may begin to appear approximately 2 weeks after this treatment. This is when new skin cells develop. However, white spots or cysts may continue to appear for several weeks. Redness continues to decrease for several months.

Is There A Recovery Process After Chemical Peels?

There may be a slight recovery process after a chemical peel. How long that is depends on the type of peel that is performed.

After a light chemical peel, patients can expect their skin to be dry, red, and mildly irritated for up to a few days. We may suggest certain moisturizing or protective creams or ointments to apply to assist with the recovery process. By one-week post-treatment, most side effects of the peel are gone and the skin looks smooth and radiant.

After a medium chemical peel, patients can expect moderate redness and swelling. The skin may feel tight and may sting for a short time. Immediately after a medium peel, the provider may apply a protective cream or ointment to decrease stinging and redness. For a few days after a medium peel, patients may want to fan the face or apply ice packs for short periods to soothe warmth and stinging. Side effects of a medium peel should resolve in 7 to 14 days. However, slight redness may last for months.

After a deep chemical peel, patients can expect significant redness and swelling. The eyes may swell shut for a short time. The skin may throb and burn or sting. Immediately after a deep chemical peel, the provider may apply a watertight dressing. Prescription pain medication may be taken to maintain comfort and the patient will need to sleep with their head elevated. New skin develops about two weeks after a deep chemical peel. However, redness and other side effects can last for several weeks up to several months.
